Chlorella is naturally high in vitamin K, so if you take anticoagulant medication such as warfarin, speak to your doctor before use, as a change in vitamin K intake can alter your INR. It also naturally contains iodine, so do not use it if you have a thyroid condition without medical advice, and do not take it alongside kelp or an iodine supplement. Chlorella commonly causes wind, loose stools or stomach discomfort in the first days of use, so start at one capsule with food. Some people become more sensitive to sunlight while taking it. Do not use it if you are allergic to moulds or algae, and speak to your doctor first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a weakened immune system. Algae take up metals from the water they grow in, so only buy chlorella from suppliers who test for heavy metals.
